Healthy Tips
  • Install and use fans vented to outdoors in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Vent clothes dryer to outdoors.
  • Clean cool mist and ultrasonic humidifiers daily and use only distilled water in them.
  • Empty water trays in air conditioners, dehumidifiers, and refrigerators frequently.
  • Clean and dry, or remove, water damaged carpets.
  • Use basements as living areas only if they are leak-proof and have adequate ventilation. Use dehumidifiers, if necessary, to maintain humidity at 35-50 percent.
  • Clean floors, bedding, and stuffed furniture frequently with a HEPA vacuum to remove sources of mold, dust and pests—such as cockroaches and dust mites—and clean areas regularly.
  • Use breathable covers for mattresses and pillows.
  • Discard stacks of old newspapers, papers, and cardboard boxes.
  • Install carbon monoxide and smoke detector devices in your home, particularly in bedroom areas.
  • Have your home tested for Radon, a naturally occurring gas that seeps into basements from underground.
  • Remove shoes before entering your home.
